The ‘Are you noticing?’ Menu

FREE TRAUMA RESOURCE

A reference tool for spotting when you, or your client, have moved out of the observational stance that supports EMDR processing.

In EMDR, the client’s job is to notice what arises and report it back. When we observe what comes up without trying to change, judge, analyse, or control it, there is more room for processing to unfold.

The catch is that our brains really like to think, explain and make sense of things. Most people slip out of noticing without realising it, and that can interrupt or complicate the processing.

This menu names twelve common ways people move out of observation, so you can recognise what’s happening and return to noticing.

for emdr clients and clinicians.

How to use it

Keep it nearby during processing. Use this if processing stalls and basic unblocking strategies fail. The solution may be as simple as having the client return to noticing without judgement.
